The Glory that Was Greece
Greece is now just a small country that is a member of the European Union. But in ancient times, it was one of the most powerful empires in the world, much larger than the Roman Empire at its peak. Ancient Greece has many contributions to the world, among them are its literature that speaks of gods like Zeus and immortal stories like Helen of Troy as elaborated in the story of the Trojan Wars. It also gave the world the only surviving collective sports the world has ever known – Olympics. How many athletes desire to win an Olympic gold? It is considered to be the achievement of a lifetime. Plato and Homer also shaped ancient philosophy whose influences are still with us today.
A visit to Greece is like going back in time on a time capsule. Grecian architecture, sculpture and painting are its eternal gifts to world civilization. While Europe was still ruled by savages, Greece was already basking in opulent wealth while conquering most of their nearby kingdoms. Alexander the Great came out of Greece to rule much of the known world during his time. He was considered the greatest military strategist by defeating armies several times larger than his army.
